One of nature’s greatest shows on earth takes place in the North Carolina Mountains in October as turning leaves paint the autumn landscape.
Nothing is more glorious than Autumn in the mountains. The brilliant leaf color painting the countryside with splashes of yellow, orange and crimson are a sight to behold.

FALL LEAF COLOR GUIDE

Here is a short list of some of the trees you are likely to see as you travel to Bear Creek.

The large blossoms that make the magnolias famous are long gone by this time of year. The leaves of the trees, however, turn a greenish-brown during this season.
Oaks generally turn a deeper, more brown red than maples.
Sourwood is among the best known trees of the region because of the fine honey bees produce from its nectar. In the summer, sourwoods have beautiful sprays of bell-like flowers. The remnants of these, in the fall, contrast with a deep, rich red that is unique to this tree's leaves.
The leaves of beech trees turn a light brown color.
Birch tree leaves turn a light to brilliant yellow.
Sumac is easy to spot because of its brilliant red leaves. While often shrub-like, there are some older sumacs here that actually reach tree-sized proportions.
The leaves of black gum trees turn a deep burgundy color.

Maples are among the most colorful trees in the forest. Their broad leaves often change to brilliant red, though
some turn yellow.
Mountain ash trees put on a rich display of light reddish leaves.
